Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure for removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size more proportional to the body and alleviate the discomfort associated with excessively large breasts (macromastia). Disproportionately large breasts can cause both physical and emotional suffering to patients. Patients with macromastia may experience physical discomfort due to breast weight. The resulting pain may make it difficult for some patients to perform physical activities. Along with the physical ailments of macromastia, some patients may suffer from emotional stress or more serious mental health problems.
